Freeview has announced that two million digital boxes and digital televisions were sold during the last quarter of 2006, making a total of 15 million sales since its launch in October 2002.

The new Freeview Playback digital TV recorder will be launched later this year.

Cary Wakefield, Freeview general manager, said, “We’ve enjoyed our most successful Christmas ever and are delighted to confirm our continuing popularity. With two million sales since Ofcom’s last report, which put Freeview in 9.3 million homes, we’re well on our way to becoming the nation’s favourite way to watch TV.”

Meanwhile Sky has announced sales of its products and services exceeded one million for the first time over the same period.

The total number of Sky TV customers rose by 183,000 to 8.441 million and demand from new customers joining Sky was at its highest quarterly level for six years.

Sky HD has been confirmed as Sky’s fastest-selling additional TV product ever just seven months after launch, with a total of 184,000 customers, up from 96,000 at the end of September. Sky+ now has 1.97 million customers, up from 1.69 million at the end of September.

James Murdoch, Sky’s chief executive, said: “With over one in four of our customers now taking an additional service from Sky, more people are choosing more of our products than ever before. In 2007, we will continue to drive towards our goal of being the leader in entertainment and communications in the UK and Ireland.”
