Spotify expands onto connected TV with Samsung deal

By
Spotify has today launched on Samsung's Smart TVs, marking the first time that the popular music streaming service has been offered by a TV manufacturer.

A new Spotify App is now available on selected Samsung internet-connected TV sets, Blu-ray Players and home theatre systems today, enabling users to stream a library of more than 18 million songs.

After downloading the app and logging in, Spotify Premium subscribers will be able to enjoy, discover and share music on their living room device, as well as see all of their already saved playlists.

The Spotify user interface has been tailored for Samsung Smart TV to make it easier to use on the larger screen, Samsung said in a statement.

Spotify is already available on the Virgin Media cable TV platform, but this is understood to be the first time that a major TV manufacturer has partnered with the Anglo-Swedish company.

Pascal de Mul, the global head of hardware partnerships at Spotify, said: "It's our dream to make all the world's music available instantly to everyone, everywhere, and bringing our service to Samsung Smart TVs is taking us another step closer to turning this dream into reality.

"The television is at the heart of most people's home entertainment experience, so it is a natural fit to make our music service available on internet-connected Smart TVs."

Samsung's director content services, Dan Saunders, added: "We are thrilled to debut the new Spotify app on Samsung Smart TVs, which will make listening to favourite tracks even easier for our customers who will no longer have to worry about connecting cables from their laptop or tablet to their HiFi equipment.

"For the first time, they will be able to use their Samsung Smart TVs and home theatre systems to enjoy Spotify's huge music library from the comfort of their living room."

The Spotify App is initially available from today (October 10) on the Samsung Series 7 and Series 8 Smart TVs, but will expand to the rest of the range at the end of the month.
