Acer delays Windows RT tablets following mixed Surface reception

By
Acer has delayed the release of its Windows RT tablets until some time in 2013.

The Taiwanese manufacturer initiated the move following the lukewarm reception of Microsoft's own Surface tablet, BBC News reports.

Acer's Windows RT-powered devices are unlikely to be released before April next year, but the company will continue to support the full version of Windows 8 with the release of its new Iconia products.

Windows RT is a scaled-down version of Windows 8 designed specifically to run on tablet devices, with features including optimised battery life and accelerometer support.

Microsoft's Windows RT model of its Surface tablet was criticised in the press for its lack of software support, an issue that was exacerbated by the fact that RT devices can only install third-party applications from its own store.

Earlier today, it was announced that the desktop edition of Windows 8 reached the milestone of four million users in less than a week.
