Barack Obama's victory tweet has quickly become the most popular retweeted message of all time.

The re-elected US president posted a photo of himself hugging the First Lady Michelle Obama on the micro-blogging site soon after the result was confirmed.

The photo came with the simple caption: "Four more years."

It had been shared on the site over 500,000 times in just a few hours, making it the most popular tweet ever by more than 100,000 already.

A further tweet by Obama was not far behind, being retweeted 200,000 times.

The second tweet read: "This happened because of you. Thank you."

The US presidential election set a Twitter record by hitting 31.7 million messages relating to the event.

The incumbent president of the United States was re-elected for four more years, beating his Republican rival Mitt Romney to the White House.
