Virgin Media launches TV Anywhere online, mobile app

By
Virgin Media has today (November 7) launched Virgin TV Anywhere, its new service that will enable cable TV users to stream live television online and on mobile devices.

Available to all Virgin TV customers at no extra cost, TV Anywhere can be accessed through a web browser via a dedicated website, or a smartphone or tablet app, initially on Apple iOS but with Android to follow in 2013.

The service, similar to the Sky Go multiplatform TV offering from Sky, enables users to live stream up to 45 channels at launch, depending on their TV package.

This includes the Sky Sports and Sky Movies channels, along with the Channel 5 family of networks, British Eurosport, Cartoon Network and others.

It also offers up to 4,000 hours of TV available to watch on-demand at any time, including Sky On Demand (Sky1, Sky Living, Sky Sports and Sky Movies), and the catch-up TV services from BBC, ITV, 4oD and Demand 5.

Around two-thirds of Virgin Media's TV customers access the provider's video on-demand services, and so Virgin wants to give them greater freedom to "enjoy their favourite channels wherever they want too".

Virgin TV Anywhere is embedded with social media functionality allowing users to share their thoughts on TV shows.

Streaming on the mobile apps is available over WiFi, but mobile 3G is not supported.

Alongside TV and on-demand, the online service of TV Anywhere brings extra features for Virgin's TiVo customers, including the ability to manage their box remotely, set recordings and access My Shows.

The mobile and tablet app, initially available on iPad, iPhone and iPod, also enables TiVo users to schedule, record and delete shows, as well as rate programmes using TiVo's trademark Thumbs Up/Down.

"The world of digital entertainment is moving so fast, consumers are always looking for the next 'big thing' to take advantage of the features and connectivity built into today's gadgets," said Cindy Rose, the director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media.

"Virgin TV Anywhere builds upon our fantastic TV service, blending in the best of TiVo and our expertise in broadband and mobile, to bring customers a compelling entertainment experience to enjoy whenever they want, wherever they are - all at no extra cost."

Virgin said that it will add more channels as the service evolves, but the full list currently available includes (some require subscription):
