Android claims 90% of China smartphone market

Google's Android operating system has increased its stranglehold on the Chinese market, claiming more than 90% of it during the last quarter.

New figures from Beijing-based research firm Analysys International reveal that the platform rose from 83% in Q2 to 90.1% in the third quarter, Tech in Asia reports.

Apple's iOS software saw its marketshare decline from 6% to 4.2% during the period in question, while Nokia's diminishing Symbian is down to 2.4%.

The iPhone has struggled to gain a foothold in the territory because it costs significantly higher than its Android counterparts.On average, the Cupertino firm's handsets are priced more than three times that of their rivals.

Despite this obstacle, Apple will launch a renewed push in China at Christmas when the iPhone 5 is released in the country.

Elsewhere, Google's search engine service has not enjoyed the same success over in China, with recent figures suggesting it has slipped behind local alternatives.
