Investigation launched into Sky's DTT plans

Sky's plans to launch a pay television service on digital terrestrial TV will be scrutinised by Ofcom on competition grounds.
The regulator said today that although it would consult on specific licence variations needed to permit Sky to operate such a service, "the implications of the possible entry of BSkyB into the pay DTT market, including impact on consumers and emerging competition," will be part of a wider ranging investigation into the pay television market announced this morning.
In response, Sky made reference to the companies which requested Ofcom's investigation: "BT, Top Up TV and Setanta all have a commercial interest in preventing Sky from increasing customer choice by developing a new pay-TV service on the DTT platform."
