Facebook has been linked with an acquisition of cross-platform chat application WhatsApp.

TechCrunch cites inside sources claiming that Mark Zuckerberg's firm has held talks with the developers of the software, but a potential price for the buyout was not divulged.

WhatsApp is a free messaging service for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Symbian, and Windows Phone devices that boasts around 100 million users per day across 250 countries.

The firm revealed in October that it was serving some 1 billion messages per day, but recently came under fire by security researchers, who discovered that its local database storage encryption could be deciphered.

Facebook made the only acquisition in its history when it purchased photo service Instagram in a deal worth $1bn (£629m) earlier this year.

Neither WhatsApp nor Facebook have officially confirmed that talks have taken place between the companies.
