Huber thanked those who had downloaded the app and added: "We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world.

"Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years."

Google Maps returned to iOS on December 13, following Apple's decision to introduce proprietary mapping software with the release of iOS 6 in mid-September.

Apple Maps were ill-received by consumers and CEO Tim Cook was forced to issue an apology for any "frustration" caused.

Google Maps for iOS is available for free from Apple's App Store.
