iPhone 5, New iPad named best tech of 2012 by Digital Spy readers

Apple was the big winner in the Digital Spy 2012 end of year tech poll, with the iPhone 5 being named best mobile and the New iPad the most desirable new tech of the year.

The latest iPhone handset won a whopping 55.8% of the vote, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 polling less than half that number on 24.4%.

The New iPad was named the most desirable new technology of the year with 31.2% of the vote, and its smaller sibling the iPad mini followed in second with 15.6%.

Tablets dominated the most desirable tech poll, with Amazon's Kindle Fire HD coming third with 11.5%

Meanwhile, the BBC iPlayer was named the best non-gaming app of the year, grabbing 43.9% of the vote.

With much of the voting done ahead of the recent controversy over its privacy policies, Instagram came second with 14.9%, and messaging service WhatsApp was third with 11.9%.
