The latest iPhone handset won a whopping 55.8% of the vote, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 polling less than half that number on 24.4%.

The New iPad was named the most desirable new technology of the year with 31.2% of the vote, and its smaller sibling the iPad mini followed in second with 15.6%.

Meanwhile, the BBC iPlayer was named the best non-gaming app of the year, grabbing 43.9% of the vote.
With much of the voting done ahead of the recent controversy over its privacy policies, Instagram came second with 14.9%, and messaging service WhatsApp was third with 11.9%.
