Vodafone launches pre-owned smartphone service

By
Vodafone has launched a scheme offering "nearly new" smartphones for discounted prices on pay-as-you-go (PAYG) and pay-monthly.

The mobile operator said that it wants to make it "more affordable for customers to get their hands on a smartphone".

The new scheme is primarily targeting PAYG customers who have not yet 'made the leap' to an advanced mobile device.

Nearly New phones are handsets that have been returned in a "very good condition" by Vodafone customers. The devices are put through a series of checks and given a full security wipe, before being reboxed with the right accessories.

Vodafone said that pre-owned offers will vary depending on the phones that are returned, but the scheme launches with a Nearly New 8GB iPhone 4 for £250 on PAYG, compared with £405 for a brand new handset on the Vodafone website.

On pay-monthly, a pre-owned Samsung Galaxy S3 is available for free at £33 a month with unlimited calls and texts, down from £37 a month for a brand new phone.

Most pre-owned handsets are currently bought on eBay or at retailers, but they often do not come with a full warranty as standard.

Vodafone feels that the chief benefit of its scheme is that PAYG Nearly New phones come with a 12-month warranty, and pay-monthly phones have a 24-month warranty.

"Nearly New is designed to make it even more affordable for people, especially those who prefer pay-as-you-go services, to get their hands on a smartphone and start using the mobile internet," a Vodafone spokesperson said.

"It is part of our ambition to get the internet into the hands of our customers. It follows the changes we have already made to the way we sell new devices - such as refurbishing our shops to focus on service and introducing our Tech Team of in-store, online and call centre technical support staff - to ensure that we help our customers get the most out of their new gadget."

Nearly New is available for PAYG handsets across all Vodafone stores now, and will be launched online next week. The scheme is available in selected stores for pay-monthly customers and also online.
