Windows 7 also saw an increase in the final month of the year, climbing from 44.71% to 45.11% - a rise that has been attributed to PC sales during the festive period.

Microsoft's operating systems appeared to make gains at the expense of Apple's OS X, which dropped from 7.3% to 7.07%.

Windows RT, the latest tablet-based version of Windows, currently holds a 0.01% marketshare. Microsoft's Surface tablet is believed to be the most popular device running this version.
