Foursquare changes privacy policy, will display full names

By
Foursquare has announced that changes to its privacy policy will come into effect from January 28.

The check-in service has informed its account holders that it will be displaying full names in the future and sharing more data with venue owners.

However, Foursquare users will be able to opt out of both changes via the settings menu should they wish to maintain the original status quo.

The new policy will enable business owners to monitor users' check-in activity for longer periods, removing the three-hour restriction that is in place under the current system.

Foursquare says that this will enable retailers to "identify their customers and give them more personal services or offers" based on the feedback they compile.

Instagram recently caused a stir when it announced controversial changes to its privacy policy that would have effectively given the firm the right to sell user photos without permission or compensation.

The Facebook-owned company was forced to backpedal on the measures following a user backlash.
