Tegra 4 high-powered processor unveiled by NVIDIA

NVIDIA has today announced the Tegra 4, claimed to be the world's fastest processor for mobile and entertainment devices that supports up to 72 custom cores and 4K resolution.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Tegra 4 boasts "record-setting performance and battery life".

NVIDIA says it gives a boost to graphics processing, web browsing, visuals and camera capabilities on smartphones and tablets, gaming devices, auto systems and PCs.

Previously codenamed "Wayne", the Tegra 4 features 72 custom NVIDIA GeForce GPU cores - six times the power of the Tegra 3 processor, which currently runs in a range of advanced smartphones and tablets.

NVIDIA says that this power boost will deliver more realistic gaming experiences and higher resolution displays, including up to 4K, which is four times the resolution of 1080p HD.

Tegra 4 includes the first quad-core application of ARM's Cortex-A15, which delivers 2.6x faster performance on web browsing and apps.

It also supports worldwide 4G LTE voice and data through the optional fifth-generation NVIDIA Icera i500 processor, said to deliver four times the processing capability of its predecessor.

"Tegra 4 provides enormous processing power and efficiency to power smartphones and tablets, gaming devices, auto systems and PCs," said Phil Carmack, senior vice president of the Tegra business at NVIDIA.

"Its new capabilities, particularly in the area of computational photography, will help improve a whole range of existing products and lead to the creation of exciting new ones."

Tegra 4 also introduces Computational Photography Architecture, which NVIDIA says upgrades photo capture to high dynamic range (HDR) levels by bringing together the processing power of the GPU, CPU and the camera's image-signal processor.

The company says that even images and videos taken with a flash will be captured in "the way they are seen by the human eye - with detail in both bright and dark areas".

A second-generation battery saver core is used for low power during standard use, and PRISM 2 Display technology reduces backlight power to save on the juice.

This means that Tegra 4 is also claimed to consume up to 45% less power than the Tegra 3 in "common use cases", meaning it can support up to 14 hours of HD video playback on a smartphone.
