Microsoft has been linked with an acquisition of Dell.

The Windows platform holder is reportedly willing to offer between $1-3 billion for the PC hardware firm, according to CNBC.

Microsoft is said to be seeking a leveraged buyout, which would give it a controlling stake in the company and help spearhead its recent move into hardware development.

Dell founder Michael Dell and representatives from the firm's corporate sponsor Silver Lake Partners have allegedly held talks with Microsoft over the matter, but is unknown how far along negotiations are.

Microsoft broke into the tablet PC market last year with the release of the Window RT-powered Surface device. A new version of the slate running the full version of Windows 8 will debut next month.

Neither party has officially confirmed that they are in talks over a potential buyout.
