Cheaper Raspberry Pi computer goes on sale

By
A cheaper version of the Raspberry Pi micro computer has gone on sale in the UK.

Model A of the mini PC is a lower-specced iteration, with a price tag of £15.95, that consumes less energy than the existing Model B.

Raspberry Pi Model A packs 256MB of RAM, only one USB port and does not sport an Ethernet connection, but runs off 30% less power than its predecessor.

"The release of the A version fulfils the promise to make a computer for about £15 that was made when the first prototype Raspberry Pi computers were unveiled in early 2011," said Raspberry Pi Foundation community manager Liz Upton.

Both Raspberry Pi models run the Linux operating system and come uncased without keyboard or monitor, designed to boost interest in computer programming at grassroots level.

Last month, Google teamed up with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to provide 15,000 Raspberry Pi Model B computers for schools around the UK as part of a special IT initiative.

Raspberry Pi has sold more than 1 million units since its launch in early 2012.
