Sir Jony Ive, the Apple designer behind products such as the iMac and iPhone, is to be awarded a gold Blue Peter badge in a gadget special of the show this weekend.

Ive, Apple's senior vice president of industrial design, has enjoyed years of design plaudits, earned millions of dollars and was given a Knighthood last year, but he will now get the highest accolade of the long-running BBC show.

Apple's Jony Ive gets Blue Peter badge

London-born Ive, who is apparently a life-long Blue Peter fan, will appear on Blue Peter this Saturday (February 16) accepting his Gold Badge.

Presenter Barney Harwood interviews the softly-spoken Brit about his memories of Blue Peter, including how the show reused old items that people thought were no longer useful.

"I remember very, very vividly a detergent bottle that had been cut and turned upside down, and it made this fantastic paint brush holder that you could put water in," he says in the interview.

"But if you knocked it over, because of the way it had been designed, if you turned it upside down it would not spill. I don't know how long ago that was, but I remember that really clearly.

"But I love the way that it was products that you thought were no longer useful but they were reusing them. I thought that was fantastic."

In the special episode, Ive also reviews several product designs sent in by Blue Peter viewers.

These include a special lunch box with a code lock security system, to which Ive remarks that they will be "the most secure sandwiches in the school".

He describes the gold badge as an "absolutely incredible" honour and to mark the occasion, his team has created a unique, large Blue Peter badge crafted from one piece of solid aluminium that takes 10 hours to process.

While presenting it to Harwood, Ive uses the trademark Blue Peter phrase, "here's one that we made earlier".

Ive joins an elite club of just 1,000 people who have been awarded a gold Blue Peter badge, including David Beckham, JK Rowling, Tom Daley, Damian Hirst and The Queen.

Ewan Vinnicombe, acting editor of Blue Peter, said: "Sir Jonathan Ive is an inspiration to children around the world and we were ecstatic to hear his comments and design advice to our viewers who will remember such feedback for a lifetime."

The Blue Peter gadget special featuring Sir Jonathan Ive will air on CBBC this Saturday (February 16) at 10am.
