Facebook Home receives 'muted' online reception - report

By
Facebook's Home platform for Android devices received a lukewarm reception across the internet when it was unveiled, according to a report.

Research from social network analyst Synthesio suggests that the software generated a fraction of as many conversations online as the launch of the Samsung Galaxy 4 last month.

Samsung's Android handset was the subject of 323,000 comments across the web upon its unveiling, compared to the 57,000 Facebook Home generated.

The statistics also indicate that the vast majority of comments about Facebook Home were "neutral", with 86.8% falling under this category, 3.8% negative and only 9.4% positive.

Synthesio compiled the data by analysing Facebook, Twitter, blogs and the comments section of numerous news websites.

"There was a very clear disconnect between what consumers expected the announcement to be about and what was actually revealed," said Synthesio managing director Catriona Oldershaw.

"In the run up to the announcement, many people expected a brand new Facebook 'phone' to be announced, rather than a new operating system. This goes some way to explaining the rather subdued response online.

"Online comments were also very US-centric, with 48% of conversations originating in the US and only 28% in Europe and 11% in Asia.

"To put this into context, when the Samsung Galaxy S4 was launched last month, comments were split evenly across these three key markets. This could indicate that the announcement has much less global appeal given the differing levels of Facebook penetration across the globe."

Facebook Home, described as a "wrapper" for the Android operating system that brings close integration with the social network, will be available to download on April 12.
