Yahoo to close Chinese email service

Yahoo has announced that it will close its Chinese email service in August.

Users are being advised to register with AliCloud, a product run by Yahoo China's parent company Alibaba, to prevent loss of emails and data before the service is completely closed on August 19.

Alibaba has run Yahoo China since 2005 when a deal was struck with Yahoo Inc., but reports on Chinese website Sina Tech suggest that the company is eager to return the operation to its US parent next month, according to Sky News.

A statement issued by Yahoo China said: "We will offer several options to our users to make this transition as smooth as possible, and China Yahoo users will have four months time to migrate their accounts."

Despite providing email to an estimated 218 million Chinese users in 2009, the service has fallen to a 2% market share in recent years against tough local competition, pushing Yahoo China to sixth place according to Hitwise statistics.

Outside of China, Yahoo recently announced that it would shut down a number of products, including Yahoo Mail Classic.
