New features of the iOS and Android applications include a visual update, video messages, a new voice engine and the ability to check contacts' online status.

The mobile software also includes cross-connectivity with the desktop version, allowing users to start calls in their computers and carry them over to another device.

Viber made the headlines recently when a Vietnamese security firm discovered a bug in the service that enabled hackers to break into an Android device, forcing Viber Media to issue a fix.

The desktop version of Viber will be released for machines running Linux in the near future.
