Microsoft to undergo 'major restructuring'

By
Microsoft will reportedly undergo "major restructuring" as the company seeks to shift its focus from software to devices and services.

AllThingsD claims to have heard from inside sources that CEO Steve Ballmer is planning to offer more prominent roles to several of his executives in response to pressure from investors.

Skype head Tony Bates and Interactive Entertainment president Don Mattrick have been tipped to take on new positions under the new status quo.

The report is supported by comments made by Ballmer to shareholders last autumn, when he spoke of a shift in strategy.

"This is a significant shift, both in what we do and how we see ourselves - as a devices and services company," he said.

"It impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses."

Microsoft will overhaul its core product Windows 8 later this year, with the 8.1 update likely to land in preview form this month.
