Features include automatic location detection, quick access to five-day forecasts, hourly updates, pollen count, wind speed and humidity information.

The BBC developed the app following a surge in mobile traffic to the weather section of its homepage.

"The new BBC Weather app is the perfect companion for this summer's great British sport and music events," said head of BBC Weather Liz Howell.

"We know that our audiences really want that at-a-glance forecast when they're out and about, with the option of digging for further detail when they need or want to. That's exactly what we've delivered, squeezing in all of our trusted data into an app that's simple to use and looks fantastic."

Both apps offer many of the same options and layout, but the Android version comes with exclusive features, such as the option to create a homescreen widget and NFC support.
