Sony DVD recorders hit by Freeview fault

By
Sony's DVD recorder devices were hit by a widespread technical problem over the weekend that left scores of users unable to access their Freeview service.

Angry customers took to Twitter and the company's support forums to lodge complaints after a software update appeared to trigger problems.

Sony later acknowledged the fault and issued a statement laying the blame at Freeview owner Arqiva's door, claiming that the provider changed the way it distributes EPG data to its devices.

"It appears something has changed in the way that these devices are receiving EPG data from Arqiva, the people who own and operate the Freeview standard for the UK," said Sony.

The issue began on Friday (July 19) shortly after firmware 1.70 update was rolled out, but Sony confirmed that the problem was resolved for most users by Sunday (July 21).

"Most people seem to be back up and running now. Power cycling the unit (unplugging it from the wall for 30 seconds) and then running 'Easy Setup' should get you back to where you were before the issues arose.

"If your device still says 'Updating', then try the fix above to get it out of that particular mode," the company added in a further statement.

Sony has advised users to make contact via its support forums if they continue to experience issues.
