With the new Premier League season now in full swing, the number of football-related apps hitting the App Store and Google Play has started to surge.

Sky Sports Pub Challenge is geared towards pub-going fans of the sport, giving them the chance to pit their knowledge of it against rival supporters for the chance to win prizes.

Also available for Android, the software includes a built-in pub finder to help users locate their nearest establishment with a Sky Sports license, and lets them go head to head through polls, predictions and trivia before, during and after the big game.

CBeebies Playtime
Price: Free
Publisher: BBC
There's definitely a place for apps that keep the youngsters occupied to give parents a well-earned rest, and CBeebies Playtime is more than capable of doing just that.

Bringing shows like Octonauts and Alphablocks to iOS, Android and Kindle devices, the software challenges kids with mini-games based on their favourite programmes that serve to educate as well as entertain.

Parents can also record messages such as birthday wishes for their child to receive the next time they open the app. We expect there might be a few along the lines of 'bring back my iPad!'

ESPN UK
Price: Free
Publisher: ESPN
We have an exciting year of sport ahead of us, and the ever-increasing volume of apps competing to keep you up to date with the latest scores and results only enhances the level of customer choice.

ESPN UK is the latest sports news application vying for a place on your handset, offering live scores, videos and social media feeds related to football, rugby, tennis, cricket and more.

The app brings together data from ESPN.co.uk, ESPNcricinfo, ESPNFC and ESPN.com, but the omission of Premier League goals, as previously featured on the ESPN Goals app over the last three seasons, is disappointing.

Toca Kitchen is essentially the mobile gaming world's answer to Cooking Mama, but with more of an educational spin on the concept.

It comes with a kid-friendly interface, and best of all, is free of obtrusive advertising and in-app purchases.
