Meanwhile, notorious Apple product leaker Sonny Dickson posted a photo of what he claims is an unassembled version of the iPad mini 2 with space grey casing.

Apple has long been tipped to introduce Retina display technology to the iPad mini, but more recent speculation suggests that the new iteration could sport an upgraded processor instead.

The iPad mini 2 is expected to sport the company's new A7 64-bit chip and M7 motion co-processor, along with 1GB of RAM.

The Cupertino firm is expected to announce the iPad mini 2 at a media event next month, where the fifth-generation iPad and new Mac hardware are also likely to be unveiled.

Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C went on sale last week, selling 9 million units in three days.
