Apple 'planning two larger-screen iPhones with metal casing'

By
Apple is reportedly planning to launch two new iPhone devices, both with larger screen sizes than any of its previous models.

According to The Wall Street Journal, one device is expected to be 4.5 inches measured diagonally, while a second version may be available at 5 inches.

The screens measure in at a greater width than the iPhone 5, which was the first Apple smartphone to get a 4-inch display.

It is also claimed that the handsets will get a metal casing similar to the iPhone 5S's, meaning Apple will do away with the plastic exterior featured on the iPhone 5C.

However, sources dismissed previous speculation that a curved display could be introduced.

Talk of wider screens for the iPhone 6 have been rife for some time, suggesting that Apple may be about to follow the trend set by rivals such as Samsung, which has already expanded its screen sizes.

There is every reason for Apple to move towards a 'phablet' device, as recent figures from Juniper suggest that unit shipments for handsets upwards of 5 inches are set to increase. Around 20 million were sold in 2013, while the number is expected to rocket to 120 million by 2018.
