Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new Apple TV set-top box in the first half of 2014.

The Cupertino company's latest Apple TV hardware will come with a revamped operating system, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple is apparently "well into testing" the new device, which is said to include deeper ties to iOS.

The potential inclusion of iOS-related software could pave the way for new types of content such as an App Store or a Game Store, it is claimed.

Apple TV already allows users to play some games via AirPlay but a bigger focus on gaming could enable it to compete more aggressively against a growing number of TV-related streaming kits available on the market.

In the last six months the service received a boost from new channel launches, including VEVO, Disney and The Weather Channel in some territories.
