iPhone 6 may cost more than iPhone 5S, claims analyst

By
Apple is planning to slap a higher price tag on the iPhone 6 than the iPhone 5S at launch, according to a report.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek claims that the Cupertino firm has held talks with US networks about raising the cost of the handset by around $100 (£60).

However, the consumer is not expected to bear the full brunt of the price hike, with carriers likely to have to foot much of the additional charges themselves.

It is unclear whether there is any chance of Apple implementing the same strategy in Europe, but Misek believes that offering its flagship handset at a higher price could work in the firm's favour.

"The possibility may at first seem far-fetched in light of investor concerns regarding possible carrier subsidy and handset price cuts due to smartphone saturation and lack of differentiation," Misek said.

"But we think this general lack of differentiation could be the reason why Apple may be able to get a price increase.

"Carriers realise that the iPhone 6 will likely be the only headline-worthy high-end phone launched this year and that they will lose [subscribers] if they do not offer it."

Apple is not expected to officially announced the iPhone 6 until later this year, but the company has been tipped to debut iOS 8 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
