BBC to broadcast classic World Cup matches 'live' online

The BBC has announced that it will broadcast "live" streams of the home nations' greatest World Cup matches online in the run-up to this summer's tournament.

Audiences will be able to relive moments from classic games as though they are unfolding for the first time thanks to the inclusion of the broadcaster's live technology.

Each match will be aired in full and given the BBC's full accompanying treatment, with text commentary and analysis from special guests including Gary Lineker.

All BBC World Cup Rewind matches will be available to view on PC, tablet, mobile and connected TV either online or via the BBC Sport apps.

"With the end of the football season drawing near, this is a great way to bring fans together again and to start getting excited about this year's World Cup," said Ben Gallop, Head of BBC Sport Interactive.

The full World Cup Rewind schedule includes:

  • Friday May 30, 12pm: England v West Germany, 1966 final

  • Saturday May 31, 3pm: Scotland v The Netherlands, 1978 group match

  • Wednesday June 4, 12pm: England v Argentina, 1986 quarter-final

  • Saturday June 7, 3pm: England v Germany, 1990 semi-final

  • Sunday June 8, 3pm: Spain v Northern Ireland, 1982 group match
