Outage hits Virgin VOD and broadband

A major outage is affecting video on demand and broadband internet services on Virgin Media's network.
The first reports were posted to the DS forums yesterday evening just before 10pm. The reports were posted from users located in both the ex-NTL and Telewest parts of the Virgin Media network, and indicated that broadband internet and some digital TV components, such as video on demand, were completely inoperable. Some forum members reported only short outages, while others indicated services began to return around 2am; however, across large parts of the former Telewest network, both broadband internet and video on demand continued to be unavailable this morning.
An update on Virgin Media's status page said: "Some customers Nationally may currently be experiencing a loss all Digital & Broadband services. Our engineers are aware of the issue and are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible. Virgin Media apologise for any inconvenience caused."
Areas without service at the time of publication ranged from Wigan and Coventry to parts of south west London including Kingston and New Malden.
This latest outage follows a near-national outage on Virgin's TV service in October.
UPDATE: A Virgin Media spokesperson told DS: "At 9.20pm last night, customers in a number of regions temporarily lost connectivity to their broadband and Video on Demand services. This occurred as a result of an error during a routine maintenance process which affected some customers' modems and set top boxes. Broadcast television and telephone services were unaffected. Most of the problems occurred in the North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands and the majority of affected customers regained their service shortly after midnight. Our engineers are currently working to restore the few remaining connections as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused."
