#fagashbreath among top The X Factor Twitter trends

By
Gary Barlow's jibe to fellow The X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos that she had "fag ash breath" drove one of the show's biggest spikes of activity on Twitter for the current series so far.

There have been more than 13 million tweets about the ITV1 talent show's latest series from August 18 to December 2, peaking in week eight, according to data compiled by SecondSync.

Tulisa Contostavlos's reaction to Gary Barlow's "fag ash breath" slam.

Barlow accusing Contostavlos of having #fagashbreath prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter, with 13,000 tweets posted per minute about the cutting comment.

But the biggest peak came when favourites James Arthur and Ella Henderson had to fight it out in the bottom two, delivering 49,000 tweets per minute.

Of the three finalists for the show - Jahmene Douglas (#jahmene), Chistopher Maloney (#christophermaloney) and James Arthur (#jamesarthur) - it is the latter that has attracted the most tweets during live shows, beating the others by over three times.

Taking into account total tweets for each finalist during the nine Saturday night live shows, SecondSync found that Douglas had 200,000, Maloney 223,000 and Arthur well out in front with 724,000.

Andy Littledale of SecondSync said that Twitter is the "world's biggest sofa" and the place where X Factor fans get involved in a "giant conversation" during the Saturday and Sunday night shows.

"Twitter gives the audience a public forum to show their support for their favourite act or to voice their disapproval of judges' decisions," he said.

"We've seen from week one of the live shows that James Arthur has had by far the most support on Twitter. It will be fascinating to see whether James can convert those tweets to votes in the final and come out as the winner."
