'Doctor Who': David Tennant's Sonic Screwdriver TV remote hands-on

By
In terms of technology, we can think of few things less interesting than the average TV remote. Grey slabs of living room-related averageness require a serious makeover to get us excited.

Alleviating our remote control blues is this fairly awesome take on Tennant's iconic Sonic Screwdriver. The difference here is that instead of helping Time Lords fight evil, it can keep them channel hopping.

Sonic Screwdriver

Put together by the Wand Company Limited and fully licensed by the BBC, this remote is an exact replica of the very device Tennant used on TV.

It uses gestures to let you interact with your television and do things like control volume and skip back and forth between channels.

There is a total of 13 programmable gestures to play with, ranging from simple moves like flick upwards, to a rotation and tap movement.

The Sonic Screwdriver needs to be charged before it can be set up, after which you can then begin connecting it to your TV.

It has four separate control modes: a practice mode to learn gestures, an FX option so you can mimic lights and sounds seen on the show, then you have the control mode and the quiet control mode, which does the same... but quietly.

Included in the box is an info sheet on the workings of the device, as well as a display stand that features a magnet so you can show off your Sonic Screwdriver in an upright position.

Getting used to using gestures takes a bit of practice, so buyers should give the practice mode a go. It lets you know what gesture the screwdriver thinks you are doing, so you can work on getting them right.

Build quality could be a touch better, as the device is largely made from plastic, but the included sound Effects more than make up for this.

All in all, an awesome bit of fan service and a must for serious Doctor Who fans.

For those interested, the Tennant Sonic Screwdriver is available now for £69.95 from Firebox.com.
