A good response from the Sony helpline directed me to a local repair service (under warranty) who performed a "Factory Reset". A glance at their repair price list means this machine will have to be binned if it fails again when out of warranty.

Unpredictable, unreliable., noisy,very slow to change channel,though quite good when it works, but has an intermittent fault which causes the machine to "freeze" and not respond to the remote.Several attempts are needed to restore the functionality.On the most recent occasion while helpfully displaying "Welcome" it managed to wipe all the saved programmes from the hard drive. Unlike even the cheapest Freeview boxes it has a very limited EPG, and has frozen during overnight data collection on more than one occasion.Probably the most disappointing purchase of a top-brand product that I have ever made, with the kind of fault that probably wouldn't show itself if I sent it back.

Great bit of kit. Had the Sony box for 4 weeks and had no problems. Cool fan is quieter than a lap tops fan. EPG, all work fine. Picture and tuning first class. Looks great under the TV.

No faults except the cooling fan can somtimes be heard. It does what it says on the box.
