May 'not looking for same as Clarkson'

James May's agent has played down rumours that the presenter could leave Top Gear in a pay dispute.

Discussions had "only just started", said Annie Sweetbaum, responding to reports that May and co-star Richard Hammond had not renewed their contracts, which expire at the end of the month.

The pair are said to be seeking salaries more in line with that of host Jeremy Clarkson, who is thought to be paid up to £2 million.

"We are not looking for parity with Jeremy but the best deal we can secure for James," said Sweetbaum. "It is normal for talks to continue for some time before agreement is made."

Clarkson this weekend said he thought May and Hammond would stay because "it's the best job in the world".
