'Superstars' revival ends with 884,000

The final episode of the Superstars revival brought in just 884,000 (4.3%) to Five in the 8pm hour last night (Friday).

The sporting competition, which aired on BBC One for 12 years from 1973, returned to Five last month with an impressive 1.3 million viewers. After an initial curiosity, ratings soon dropped off and went on to hover around the 800,000 mark for most of the show's eight-week run. The performance is on a par with that of Sky1's similarly-rejuvenated format Gladiators, which has been re-commissioned for a second series.

The inevitable winner at 8pm was EastEnders, which took 7.01m (34.6%) for BBC One and a further 652,000 (3.9%) for BBC Three at 10pm. The absence of Coronation Street from the ITV1 schedule allowed property series DIY SOS, which followed at 8.30pm, to improve 1.1m week-on-week to 4.53m (22.1%).

ITV1 instead had coverage of the Uefa Super Cup game between Man Utd and Russian team Zenit St Petersburg. The match, which the English squad lost 2-1, averaged 3.8m (18.8%) between 7.30pm and 10pm. Emmerdale, which preceded the game at 7pm, was the channel's top performer of the day with 5.31m (31.2%).

The final episode of BBC One's comedy panel show Would I Lie To You?, hosted by Angus Deayton, entertained 3.31m (15.5%) at 9pm, then at 9.30pm, The Armstrong & Miller Show added 500,000 to reach 2.77m (13.2%).

BBC Two had a solid Friday night, starting with 2.11m (10.4%) for Gardeners' World. Continuing historical drama The Tudors followed at 9pm with 2.01m (9.5%), an improvement of 150,000, then a repeat of QI drew 2.25m (11.8%), the channel's strongest performance of the day.

On Channel 4, A Place In The Sun: Home Or Away climbed 300,000 to 1.56m (7.7%) in the 8pm hour, with a +1 audience of 130,000 (0.7%). The first episode of Big Brother, which included the news of Lisa Appleton's eviction from the house, followed at 9pm with 3.27m (15.5%) and 134,000 (0.9%). The figures were down 600,000 on last week, however. The later eviction show - broadcast between 10.35pm and 11.10pm - was also down, losing 500,000 to average 2.65m (17.1%) and 129,000 (1.7%). At 10pm, the final episode of The Kevin Bishop Show went out to a respectable 1.79m (9.5%) and 98,000 (0.9%).

After Superstars at 9pm, Five's audience doubled to 1.64m (7.8%) for a repeat of NCIS, the channel's highest numbers of the day. A new Law & Order: SVU followed with 1.45m (8.2%) in the 10pm hour, a rise of 500,000 on last week.

A re-run of last weekend's The X Factor delivered 452,000 (3%) to ITV2 at 7pm, with a further 89,000 (5.1%) on timeshift. Ratings improved further to an all-day high of 511,000 (2.9%) for The Xtra Factor in the 8pm hour, then Richard Gere romcom Runaway Bride had 388,000 (2.4%) until 11.15pm. 116,000 (1%) opted to watch an hour later on ITV2+1.

BBC Three's feminist documentary Dawn Gets Naked appealed to 375,000 (2%) in the 9pm hour and from 11.30pm, a Family Guy double-bill brought in reliably strong audiences of 438,000 (5.2%) and 431,000 (6.6%).

E4 peaked with 517,000 (3.6%) for first-look Hollyoaks at 7pm, but Big Brother's Big Mouth was also popular, drawing 433,000 (4.1%) at 11.05pm.

Elsewhere, Sky One peaked with 438,000 (2.8%) for its 7.30pm visit to The Simpsons and on ITV3, a screening of The Queen was attended by 429,000 (2.4%) over two hours from 8pm.
