Granada International has joined up with US movie network AMC to co-produce a new version of the cult drama The Prisoner for Sky One.

The director and cast have yet to be confirmed, but the series is planned to go into production in the spring and premiere in 2008.

AMC's executive vice president of programming and production, Rob Sorcher said: “The Prisoner redefined what was possible in the Sci-Fi/Thriller category and remains one of the most iconic classics of our time. AMC’s new series will stay true to the conceptual and visual brilliance of the original and will provide a new generation with an understanding and appreciation of Patrick McGoohan’s work.”

The show is being written by Bill Gallagher, creator and writer of Conviction and Clocking Off.

Sky One’s commissioning editor, Elaine Pyke, said: “We are thrilled to be part of this exciting international co-production and delighted that AMC has come on board. The Prisoner is one of the UK’s most talked about series and we know this new series will attract a great deal of attention from around the world.”

The original series, which starred Patrick McGoohan as Prisoner No. 6, a secret agent trapped in a remote village, first appeared in 1967.

The series will be launched by Granada International at MIPCOM 2007.
