Controversial Catholic group Opus Dei has complained to the BBC over crime drama Waking the Dead.

Two episodes of the series, aired last weekend, featured devotees of the religious group partaking in a gruesome double murder.

Opus Dei have branded the episodes as "defamatory" and have accused the BBC of breaking religious guidelines by depicting its members as "murderers, thieves and adulterers".

The BBC has said that it is yet to receive an official complaint, but if and when they do that it will be dealt with using the "usual procedure".

Sunday's episode of Waking the Dead, entitled 'The Fall', was watched by 7.2 million people.
