Jamie Oliver has awarded a gastropub to a former carpet-fitter through his TV programme, Jamie's Chef.
Aaron Craze, who dropped out of school at 15, was one of four trainees competing for a chance to run the Essex pub.
He told the Evening Standard that it meant a lot to him because a lot of his family were criminals.
Craze said of his family, "They won't think twice about putting something over on someone, even their own family, they're pretty tough like that.
"On my dad's side, they're pretty bad people. To be in a family like that and the only one to break the cycle meant a lot to me."
He added, "It doesn't matter where you're from as long as you know where you're going."
The programme will air tomorrow at 9pm.
