Alias - "Parity"
In ABC's new series, Alias, Jennifer Garner (Pearl Harbour) stars as Sydney Bristow, a graduate student who also works undercover for the CIA within its enemy organisation SD-6. In 1994 as Bristow enters college, she is marked for recruitment with Special Division-6, what she is told is a top secret department within the CIA. After seven years working with them, Bristow is a graduate student and has just been proposed to by her steady boyfriend. After she makes the error of telling him about her work, he's killed, and Bristow fights for her own life. Now she discovers that not only is SD-6 not part of the CIA, but that they are enemies of the United States. Bristow turns to the only place she can for help, the real CIA, and agrees to work as a double agent for them, working for SD-6 and reporting her findings to the CIA.
In the episode two cliffhanger, Sydney holds the plutonium core to a nuclear weapon while a gun is held to her head. Using the core as a distraction, Sydney breaks away from the terrorist and makes her way for freedom, core in hand. This is shown concurrently with Sydney explaining to one of her professors exactly why she couldn't turn a paper in on time.
SD-6 discovers a sketch from a 15th century prophet who foresaw transistors and the cellphone. Declared as a heretic, the prophet was killed, and his work subsequently seized and spread out among the world. SD-6 holds half of what seems to be digital code written by this prophet, but as to its purpose, SD-6 can't discover without the other half. Unfortunately, they aren't the only agency to have discovered the second piece of the code and its location. The infamous K-Directorate, who employs Sydney's deadly rival Anna Espinosa, is also after the second half of the code, as they believe it to be the only half. Sydney and her team are assigned to retreive the second half of the code from Madrid.
When Sydney relates her newest mission to the CIA, her contact Vaughn [Michael Vartan (Never been Kissed, The Mists of Avalon)] informs her that he's been pulled off her case in favour of a more senior officer. In Madrid, Sydney attends an Auto Museo show where both she and Anna Espinosa make their way to the secured vault with the code; only Anna makes it there first. In a wild chase through the building it appears that Anna will make it out with the code when some fancy shooting on Sydney's part causes her to drop briefcase with the code, but Anna retains the key to it.
Back at home, Sydney's friend Will (Bradley Cooper) is curious about his friend's (Sydney's fiance's) death and begins to investigate it without letting anyone else know. Later, a little alcohol make Sydney and Will slightly playful, and they share a kiss, causing an awkward moment for the two.
SD-6 discovers that the briefcase that contains the code is locked, and any forcing of it will only distroy the precious code that it contains. Their only choice is for Sydney to meet up with Anna in Berlin to open the briefcase and view the code together. The new CIA contact meets up with Sydney to give her a wire, and she demands Vaughn back on her case; or else she walks away from them.
The episode comes to a close with Sydney on a CIA wire (with her old contact Vaughn on the line) meeting Anna on in an athletic stadium with snipers ensuring no double crossing. The two open the box and their faces turn to horror as a sizzling sound begins.
As with all of the Alias episodes to date, 'Parity' is filled with action and intrigue as the viewers follow Sydney's quest for truth. The episode introduces new elements to the main character's relationships with her CIA contact and her late fiance's best friend - that may lend her some difficulty later in the series.
Alias: 'Parity' airs Wednesday, February 6 at 21:00 on Sky One.
