Celebrity Adventures - Alyson Hannigan
In this edition of Celebrity Adventures, the show where Kelly Wiglesworth and Scott Lasky take celebrities out of Hollywood to exciting and exotic places, Alyson Hannigan is taken to Papua New Guinea, a group of islands in Southeast Asia. While there aren't any vampires or demons for Alyson, there are a few surprises in store.
Alyson Hannigan is best known for her role in American Pie as Michelle, and for being one of the stars of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as the powerful witch Willow. She met her boyfriend Alexis Denisof on the set of Buffy, where they tried to act professional before finally giving into temptation. Now Alexis stars in the popular spin-off to Buffy, Angel.
You can tell that Alyson and Alexis do not really know what they are letting themselves in for. What will their experience in Papua New Guinea be like?
The first stop for the couple and the two hosts is Tari. They are met by thousands of people, all excited to see the VIPs who have come to visit. You can tell that it is going to take some adjusting for all of them in Tari - the toilet is a small hole in the ground! While they have the "toilet experience," they hear an instrument being played. Alexis goes to check it out, and finds a man playing a jawsharp, which is a stringed harmonica type instrument. Unfortunately, when Alexis tries to have a go at playing, he is pathetic!
As they walk through the village, they notice some dartboards have been put up. They are invited to have a go at playing, and Alyson asks to speak to the best darts player around. A small boy comes forward, and Alyson challenges him to a game, for a can of Coke! "I think he's got it in the bag!" Alyson laughs.
Next, they meet the Huli tribe, who wear reed through their noses, and invite the group to take part in their welcoming ceremony, the "Sing Sing". The "Sing Sing" is a performance for special occasions, or to welcome VIPs. The men and women are separated, and dressed accordingly by the natives. "I didn't wake up this morning, or any morning of my entire life, and imagine that I would look like this!" Alexis says.
They all take part in the "Sing Sing" and it is clear that the natives are extremely happy that their guests are taking part in their culture.
That night, after discovering where they were going to be sleeping, dinner was served. The dinner was "Mumu," vegetables mixed with hot stones and covered with leaves. These vegetables included "Pit Pit," an asparagus type vegetable.
The next day, they visit the Huli Village, and they encounter a man making a bowstring out of bamboo, using only his hands. The men find it amazing that all of the tribesmen know how to make so many things, using only their hands, and a limited number of tools. They are taken to a place where the tribesmen practise with their bows and arrows (The Huli tribe are still at war with other tribes). They are given their own bows and arrows to practise with, but it is only Alexis who is actually any good! Also, Kelly cannot believe that people who go around with reed through their noses are freaked out by her tongue piercing. "Do you eat with that?" one of the tribesmen asks.
Alyson, the animal lover, soon has her first (but not her last) encounter with a beautiful creature. She meets a tree kangaroo, which is an endangered species. Later on, they all go on a hike to find an enormous, beautiful waterfall.
Then, they have to say goodbye to Tari and the tribesmen, and get on a plane to Karawari, where they go on an upstream boat ride. People in Karawari live right by the water, and the group spot some kids playing in a tree.
The tribe in Karawari is called Yak-Koim. They are former cannibals, and everybody can't help but feel a little frightened. When they have been reassured that the tribe are not going to eat them, (they have not resorted to cannibalism for 70 years), they begin to calm down. But, that's until they are given a very detailed description of how they killed their victims before devouring them! "I'm a vegetarian now!" Alyson laughs. They end up dancing with the former cannibals.
On their last day, they visit Madang. They are welcomed with a drink. Madang seems to be the most modern place that they have visited so far. Alexis and Kelly go on a dive and explore a wreck, the "Coral Queen" which sank during World War Two.
Back on the boat, they look for dolphins, and Alyson is ecstatic when they spot some. She keeps on leaning over, and the others worry that she is about to jump in! This is the closest that Alyson has ever been to wild dolphins.
But, as with all trips, their visit must come to an end. Alyson and Alexis look as if they have enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and were honoured to be able to meet the many different people and visit the different places.
This was an interesting and informative show, catering for fans of Alyson and Alexis, and also to travel fans. It's fascinating to see how these people live, and how Alyson and Alexis react to their new surroundings.
