Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking is to front a major new TV series about the universe.

The 65-year-old Cambridge professor will explain the theories behind his book A Brief History Of Time in Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe, which starts on Channel 4 in March.

He will also attempt to make concepts such as String Theory and Supersymmetry understandable to non-scientists in the programme, in which he will speak through his electronic voice synthesiser.

A source told The Sun: "Stephen is brimming with theories about why the universe exits and we're all here.

"But many people don't connect with his work as it can seem so complicated. He will explain it himself in very straightforward language."

The show is part of Channel 4's pledge to try out "new ideas" in the key 9pm slot in its winter schedule.
