'Million Dollar Baby'
The actress was devastated when bosses decided they no longer wanted her on the US teen drama, which was reaching the end of its ten-season run.
She went on to win the first of two Academy Awards just two years later, but said being fired from the programme after a few episodes had a lasting effect on her confidence.
She said: "They [producers] never told me why, they just said it wasn't working... Especially when it's in its eighth season and no one's watching it. You just think, 'I'm not good enough for this show?'"
Swank plays the lead role in romantic comedy PS I love You, which hits UK cinemas on Friday.
