Over 5m see James Nathan win 'MasterChef'

More than 5m people watched James Nathan triumph in last night's MasterChef final.

BBC Two took a rare win in the 8pm slot with an audience of 5.1m and a 21.3% share of viewers. After beginning with 4.4m (19%) the audience grew to 5.7m (23.2%) for the quarter of an hour to 9pm.

It was an impressive 57% up on last year's slot average of 2.2m (10%), but had 100,000 fewer viewers than the 2007 final.

MasterChef's latest run has been popular throughout with a 3.1m (12.7%) average audience.

In joint second place at 8pm were BBC One with Waterloo Road, on 4.7m (19.7%), and ITV1 with The Bill taking 4.7m (19.5%).

Two instalments of Jamie at Home on Channel 4 suffered at the hand of MasterChef's success. The first, at 8pm, was watched by 1.6m (7%), while 1.7m (7%) saw the second at 8.30pm. On Five Build a New Life in the Country – Was It Worth It? attracted 1.1m (4.6%) viewers at 8pm.

BBC Two could not hold on to the viewers at 9pm, though, and That Mitchell and Webb Look only drew 1.7m (7.2%). BBC One took the lead, with Ashes To Ashes reaching 5.8m (24.9%).

On ITV1 4.7m (20.2%) watched Trial and Retribution in the slot while The Girls Who Were Found Alive, a Cutting Edge show on Channel 4, took 2.6m (11.3%). Five documentary The Sharkman won 935,000 (4%).
