'Foyle' conquers Sunday for ITV1

The opening of the fifth series of Foyle's War drew 7.1m viewers in a strong showing for ITV1 last night.

The detective drama won a 27.9% share between 8pm and 10pm, up on a slot average of 6.4m (26%). Last week ITV indicated it was already looking to commission the show for a sixth run. Following at 10pm, CGI satire show Headcases held on to a decent 4m (19%).

BBC One's main shows for the night both lost viewers next to Foyle's. The final Tiger: Spy in the Jungle documentary was watched by 4.8m (19%) at 8pm - 900,000 fewer than last week - and Casualty 1907 was down 1.8m at 9pm to average 3.5m (13.7%).

Elsewhere, two new series on Channel 4 put in middling performances. At 7pm, Bremner, Bird and Fortune attracted 1.4m (6.6%), then at 8pm Born Survivor: Bear Grylls drew 1.3m (5%).
