The second Talent semi-final drew an audience of 8.8m, or 35.3% of the total viewing audience, over 90 minutes from 8.30pm.
The figure was more than double the channel's 4.3m (18.7%) average for the slot last year, but a drop from 10.9m (42%) for Monday's first semi-final.
The Apprentice, which has won its slot with nearly every episode so far this series, was pushed into second place, attracting 6.5m (25.6%) to BBC One over an hour from 9pm. The show was moved from Wednesday to make way for an England football friendly.
On Five, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation brought in 1.6m (6.4%) from 9pm while BBC Two's The Supersizers Go... documentary drew 1.5m (5.9%).
Gordon Ramsay's F Word, on Channel 4, was apparently badly hit by the tough competition. The show haemorrhaged 1.4m viewers from last week to reach 1.1m (4.4%).
