Pele, who scored 77 goals in 92 appearances for Brazil, has been the subject of several biographies but has resisted speaking about his life in documentaries.
The 67-year-old was absent from the recent film Once In A Lifetime, which charted the rise and fall of the New York Cosmos soccer team, because he reportedly demanded $150,000 to be interviewed.
The untitled Freemantle TV project will be granted "unparalleled access" to Pele. The documentary, which is searching for a producer and director, will focus on a specific time in the athlete's career.
Paulo Ferreira, CEO of Pele's licensing agency Prime, said the documentary "will inspire and touch people of all ages, all over the world".
