Hallowe'en: TV tricks and treats

Published Thursday, Oct 27 2005, 10:00 BST | By Neil Wilkes
Fancy a fright this Hallowe'en night? Digital Spy has sifted through the schedules to find the scariest TV treats.

D.O.A. (Dead On Arrival)

When & Where: October 31, 11am, Horror Channel

Frank Bigelow is the victim in this superb 1950s noir murder mystery. The kicker? He's not dead yet. Poor Frank has been fatally poisoned and only has a few days to figure out who's done it and why. Not scary in the slightest but a great way to start Hallowe'en day. Definitely recommended.

Fright Factor:

The Blair Witch Project

When & Where: October 31, 10pm, E4

Low budget teen horror flick. A group of film-making students head out into a haunted forest and get themselves lost in the process. But something's lurking amongst the trees. This is either a film you'll be really freaked by or one where you'll walk away severely underwhelmed by the experience (I was in the latter category). One to watch if you're easily paranoid.

Fright Factor:

Tequila Bodyshots

When & Where: October 31, 9pm, Horror Channel

Three buddies (led by Matt Lawrence) venture to a Hallowe'en party in Mexico, with a trio of girls and a gormless geek in tow. On the way they meet a mysterious guy who gives Lawrence a special drink. Once he's taken it he has the ability to read girls' minds, but on the bad side it conjures up an evil bloke who's trying to kill everyone. Not to be taken seriously.

Fright Factor:

The Ring

When & Where: October 31, 9.40pm, Sky Movies 2

Naomi watches a mysterious video tape then learns she only has seven days to live. Fairly frightening, but not as so as the Japanese original.

Fright Factor:

Frankenstein

When & Where: October 29, Hallmark

Luke Goss stars in this made-for-TV adaptation of the familiar Mary Shelley classic. A little slow in places but all in all, an enjoyable romp.

Fright Factor:

Demon Wind

When & Where: November 1, 3am, Horror Channel

A group of young friends visit a broken down shack in the middle of nowhere (of course), inadvertently unleashing demons, zombies and talking dolls. This film would probably be more at home on the 'Bad Movies' channel but in fairness, it's probably not intending to be a 'serious' horror flick (or at least, one hopes not). You're not missing much if you avoid this, but then again if you're still up at this time of night you probably need a laugh or two.

Fright Factor:

The X-Files

When & Where: All weekend, FX

Probably the greatest sci-fi TV series ever gets multiple airings on FX this weekend, including a nine hour, DVT-inducing marathon on Sunday from 2pm. Episodes to watch out for include 'Humbug' (Saturday at 8pm), 'The List' (Sunday at 9pm) and 'The Ghost in the Machine' (Monday at 4pm).

Fright Factor:

The Simpsons

When & Where: All weekend, Sky One

Hallowe'en spells Treehouse of Horror for Sky One. Now they have fifteen or so to choose from and only the best make it this weekend. Notable episodes include Ned's ability to see into the future (Saturday at 6.30pm) and a visit to the island of manimals (Monday at 8pm).

Fright Factor:

100 Greatest Scary Moments

When & Where: October 31, 11pm, Channel 4

Channel 4 celebrates Hallowe'en the only way it knows how - with a countdown show. Here you'll see a medley of terrifying moments, from Hitchcock to Hammer and Darth Vader to Dracula. Oh, and Richard Hillman.
