In a nutshell: Classic, revolutionary, crime saga starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the pair of lovers on a bank-robbing, car-stealing crime spree all around Depression-hit southern America.

The bigger picture: Critics at the time were horrified by the way director Arthur Penn made romantic heroes of the 1930s outlaws. Many of the big critics of the day tried to bury the picture, but it was picked up by Pauline Kael, the film critic for The New Yorker, and it began to generate its own momentum. Younger audiences loved its sense of style, Dunaway never looked sleeker, and the way it made iconic anti-heroes of the two leads.

Bonnie And Clyde received a stunning five Academy Award( nominations for acting alone (Beatty, Michael J Pollard, Dunaway, Gene Hackman), and snapped up up Best Actress for Estelle Parsons. Nominated for Best Picture, Screenplay, Director and Costume Design, the film also won the Best Cinematography statuette for Burnett Guffey.
