TV Interview

Lil' Chris ('Everybody Loves Lil' Chris')

By
Lil' Chris ('Everybody Loves Lil' Chris')
After a successful pilot episode earlier in the year, pint-sized rocker-turned-TV presenter Lil' Chris is back for a full series of Everybody Loves Lil' Chris on T4. Each week, the 18-year-old will chat with celebrity guests, host a live music performance and face a daunting challenge. After witnessing a collision of a cod with a bearded stranger in the pilot, Chris explains to us the japes he got up to with Jack Osbourne, the hair-raising stunts he undertook during filming, and how he could evolve his stage name.

How have you changed the show since the pilot?
"We've put more substance in it, really. It's bigger and better. We've still got 'The People Vs. Lil' Chris', where we go around interviewing people [and] get some silly answers out of them. We've also got a feature called 'Lil' Chris's Big Dare'. Every week I do a dare, something really scary, like a cage fight with this guy called Popek. He's like six foot eight, absolutely massive. That was mental."

What other things did you get up to?
"I went to one of the most haunted places in Britain in Portsmouth and had to walk around that on my own in the dark. I'm scared of the dark! I also ate the world's hottest curry. It was hot. Really, really bloody hot. I'm going to be doing wing walking as well."

Who are the celeb guests joining you in the series?
"I made a sandwich with Will Young. Me and Jack Osbourne did some adrenaline challenges, like we had to blow up a balloon until it burst in our faces. We pulled a rubber band until it snapped, which was scary. We've had Alphabeat on, The Saturdays, Sugababes and Katy Perry, who was absolutely beautiful. We had Basshunter on too and he was really nice."

Who would be your ideal celeb guest?
"It would be nice to get Katie Price and Peter Andre on. Everyone who's been on has said they've really enjoyed it and it's been a good laugh. The show isn't purely about getting information out of people. To be honest, if they want to plug their show they can do it but we want to just have a laugh. It's good for people watching the show to see their favourite celebrities just chilling out and seeing them a bit more relaxed."

Do you prefer TV presenting to music?
"It's not really much different because I'm doing stuff to do with music [on this show]. I'm also involved in music with the theme tune to the show, which is one of the songs off my new album."

When can we expect the album and how's your sound changed from the last record?
"My new album comes out on October 6. It's got a couple of the songs off the old album all redone, but otherwise it's just a brand new album. It's the same sort of sound. I think we've gone a bit rockier this time. It's fun!"

How do you feel about your stage name? Would you want to be called 'Lil Chris if you're still going at 35?
"Definitely not. It's gotta be something that gets quite naturally [changed]. It's gotta be a work in progress that gets done over time."

For a start you could replace the 'i' with a 'y' and just be called Chrys.
"Oh yeah! I hadn't thought of that. A vowel-less name!"

Everybody Loves Lil' Chris airs Saturday at 9.25am on Channel 4.
