Dara O'Briain interview: 'BAFTA is the gold standard for TV' - video

By and Tom Mansell
Dara O'Briain will be slipping into his best suit and heading down to the Royal Festival Hall this weekend to host the biggest awards show in the British TV calendar - the BAFTAs!

The Irish funnyman will be handing out the gongs on Sunday night including the YouTube Audience Award, which went to The Only Way Is Essex in 2011.

Watch our interview with Dara O'Briain about BAFTA, guilty pleasures and TOWIE:

Joking about the YouTube Audience gong, O'Briain said that he had "washed [his] hands" of the award, which is the only gong voted for 100% by the public. Talking about the decision to give TOWIE an accolade, he said: "The audience need to have a long hard look at themselves."

Sherlock, Fresh Meat, Celebrity Juice, The Great British Bake Off, Educating Essex and Frozen Planet are the shows battling for this year's YouTube Audience Award. Viewers can vote for their favourite show online at YouTube.com/baftaonline.

The Mock the Week presenter also downplayed complaints that Downton Abbey and Simon Cowell's reality shows had been snubbed by BAFTA, arguing that the competition was just too strong this year.

"If there were only two nominations on a list that would be a snub," he said.

Speaking broadly about awards shows, O'Briain laughed: "Why are awards needed in the creative industry? Because we love being thanked darling!

"We love to hear how great we are. 'Oh, for me? I couldn't possibly. Oh, but it isn't just me, it's all the people around me. But I'll be keeping it'. We need that endlessly."

The Arqiva TV BAFTAs take place this weekend (Sunday, May 27) and will air on BBC One.
